Abstract

Health Information Systems (HIS) are considered one of the most fundamental pillars underpinning modern development in the contemporary healthcare environment. They represent a decisive tool in improving the quality of healthcare services and enhancing health outcomes. Health Information Systems consist of a set of integrated systems designed to collect, store, analyze, and exchange health information among healthcare professionals, patients, governmental entities, non-profit organizations, and healthcare service providers.

This study highlights the most critical components of Health Information Systems, including Electronic Medical Record systems, Health Services Development systems, and Telemedicine systems. It also examines several governmental hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to explore the mechanisms of operating Health Information Systems within these institutions, the extent to which medical staff and hospitalized patients benefit from these systems, and the methods of information and data exchange among hospital departments.

The study was conducted by analyzing the results of electronic questionnaires from previous studies that used random samples across various hospitals included in the research. Emphasis was placed on assessing the level of benefit derived from the implementation of these systems, identifying the most commonly used and activated systems, and evaluating how effectively these systems are utilized.

Furthermore, the study addresses ways to maximize patient benefits through continuous advancements in health information technologies and highlights the importance of enhancing staff competencies in interacting with these systems to ensure quality assurance in health information management. Health Information Systems are regarded as a core element of institutional development and a key factor in delivering high-quality and efficient healthcare services.
