Theories Governing NGO-Operations: A Bangladesh Perspective

Sheikh Shamim Hasnain

Abstract

This conceptual paper searches the main reasons of appearance and emergence of the NGOs in the society. The NGOs’ contributions to the socio-economic development of the developing countries are widely acknowledged. The main reasons of the emergence and existence of NGOs are extracted through a critical analysis of Weisbrod’s Public Goods and Tax-subsidy theories. Hansmann’s Contract Failure theory and Freeman’s Stakeholder theory are also taken into cognizance. Number of reasons for the appearance and emergence of NGOs are identified. Finally, Stakeholder theory is theoretically applied in the Bangladeshi NGO-context and interplay between the vital stakeholders is exhibited. Suggestion for the future researchers is drawn.
